Employers: Get ready, because 77 million Baby Boomers are poised to retire, and their Generation X replacements only number 44 million. In a job-seeker's market, the companies that will come out ahead are those that can create X-friendly workplaces.
Gen X women: You are in a far better position than your Boomer mothers to demand and achieve exactly what you want from your job--career/life balance, and meaningful, challenging work. And that goes for Gen X men as well.
These are two of the messages found in THE NEXT REVOLUTION, by Boomer mother Charlotte Shelton and Gen X daughter Laura Shelton. The book offers the first detailed profile of the generation born between 1964 and 1977, based on surveys and interviews with 1,200 Gen Xers over a six-month period.
Employers will be surprised by what these young professionals want from their jobs. It's a wildly different corporate culture than the one dominating today's business landscape, which may explain why so many Gen X women are opting out of the full-time job market altogether, and so many Gen X men "career hop."
Learn: How Gen Xers define themselves Why Gen Xers have such different needs, preferences, and values from their Boomer parents What's behind the "new momism," the "opt-out revolution," rust-out syndrome, and other Gen X trends Real-life examples of X-friendly companies, and what other companies can learn from them Four routes Xers can take to create satisfying work Seven "Quantum Skills" Xers can use to lead change
The Sheltons' findings will prove invaluable for companies looking to attract the best and brightest young employees in the coming labor shortage. As for Gen X women, the book is a call to action to advance the workplace transformation their mothers began almost fifty years ago.

To the members of Generation X, success doesn't necessarily mean accumulating power or calling every shot. So-called "Xers" tend to seek a sensible balance between their work and personal lives. Companies interested in 21st century competitiveness must provide that balance, according to a survey of 1,200 Gen Xers. Baup for Boomer-age leaders and their Gen X colleagues. Now is the time to think about the work environment you must create to recruit and retain young talent. And if you are an up-and-coming Xer, now is the time to decide what you want to up-and-come to.

Charlotte and Laura Shelton's The Next Revolution: What Gen X Women Want At Work And How Their Boomer Bosses Can Help Them Get It tells of the latest group of young female workers and why they feel disillusioned with the workplace, caught between a 'go for it' ideal and the realities of the modern corporate establishment. The Sheltons surveyed over a thousand of these women and interviewed others about their work experiences: these interviews blend with insights about the differing views of two generations to show how it affects the workplace - and what can be done to prevent the migration of talent.

The NeXt Revolution is an awesome book for any woman in the workplace. As a Gen Xer it really helped but my work situation into perspective. It's very insightful, and not just a book exclusively for women. My husband really related to the workplace narratives in the book. I recommend the book for anyone new to the workplace or frustrated with their job.
